Remember that old song?
You say to-may-toe, I say to-mah-toe,
You say po-tay-toe, I say po-tah-toe,
To-may-toe, to-mah-toe, po-tay-toe, po-tah-toe,
Let's call the whole thing off!
What do you think?
Iz-ann-ah or I-zann-ah?
Other spellings of Izannah in the 19th century a popular spelling were Izanna or Izana.
I have NO idea what is correct. I've been using the second pronunciation. My Ozarks-native Me-ma used to pronounce "Italian" with a long i, and it hits my ear the same way to say Iz-ann-ah. :~D
ReplyDeleteNot sure there is a correct way. :-)
DeleteLike many other names, there probably were variations both in pronunciation and spelling. I have always heard the long "i"--never the short one. Another name that gets lots of variety is Althea, Aletha, Alethia, Oletha, Aletta, etc.

P.S. I have to say that the captchas that Ning uses are VERY difficult to read!!! ;-)
